A Systolic Track Finding Trigger Processor
نویسنده
چکیده
1 Abstract This paper outlines the architecture of a systolic trigger processor for tracking detectors of the jetchamber type, operated inside a solenoidal magnetic field. It outputs the number of tracks and their radius of curvature in less than 10 μs. A detailed description of the constant data flow scheme is given which is maintained thoroughly from the read-out of the drift times up to the final storage of the results in registers and the creation of the trigger signal. The system consists of a preprocessor for timing signals, a Hough transform processor that determines well defined tracks, and an Euler processor that counts their number. This is done by applying the Euler relation to a binary image which is obtained from the Hough transform result by using a suitable threshold. All system components can be partitioned and integrated in field programmable gate arrays.

Systolic Processors in High Energy Physics*
Systolic processors are very well suited for the pattern recognition problems encountered in High Energy Physics. First, they provide an extremely high computing power due to their inherent massive parallelism. This computing power is needed for first and second level trigger processing tasks that have to be solved in the microsecond range and below. Second, they have a pipelined architecture t...
متن کاملA Prototype Track-finding Processor for the Level-1 Trigger of the Cms Endcap Muon System
We report on the development and performance of a novel track-finding processor for the Level-1 trigger of the CMS endcap muon system. The processor links track segments identified in the cathode-strip chambers of the endcap muon system into complete threedimensional tracks. It then measures the momentum of the best track candidates from the sagitta measured between three muon chambers in the e...
متن کاملThe Track-Finding Processor for the Level-1 Trigger of the CMS Endcap Muon System
The algorithms and hardware implementation of the Track-Finder for the CMS endcap muon system are described. The Track-Finder is implemented as 12 Sector Processors which identify up to the three best muons in 60 azimuthal sectors. The coverage in pseudorapidity includes the region of overlap with the barrel muon system. The track-finding algorithms are inherently 3-dimensional to achieve maxim...
متن کاملA Systolic Hough Transform Processor as a Second Level Trigger for Drift Chambers*
A systolic processor has been developed that executes a parallel Hough transform. The system has been tailored to a specific pattern recognition task, the identification of particle tracks in the r,φ projection of the OPAL jet chamber. For all well defined tracks the starting angle and the radius of curvature is computed in 3.3 μs. The system consists of a Hough transform processor that identif...
متن کاملFeasibility of the Hardware Muon Trigger Track Finder Processor in CMS
This paper describes a feasibility study for the design of the muon trigger track finder processor in the high-energy physics experiment compact muon solenoid (CMS), planned for 2005, at CERN. It covers the specification, proposed method, and a prototype implementation. Comparison between several other measurement methods and the proposed one are carried out. The task of the processor is to ide...
